Sale of bull will support military

BERTRAND, Neb. — A Red Angus identified as No. 21 will be in the spotlight at Monday's Cross Diamond Cattle Co. sale south of Bertrand.

Cross Diamond owners Scott and Kim Ford have a bull sale every December. This year, proceeds from the sale of No. 21 will go to the All American Beef Battalion, an organization that supports troops while also promoting U.S. beef.

Battalion members organize and sponsor steak feeds, entertainment, programs, meetings and projects for military service members and their families.

The Fords chose bull No. 21 to represent the 21-gun salute given during military events.

The sale will begin at 1 p.m. at the Cross Diamond sale barn in Bertrand.

"Kim and I have said, 'What's more American than a good steak and an American soldier?' " said Scott Ford. "The sacrifices that they have made to keep us free; we can't hardly do enough to show them thanks."

The couple first heard about the All American Beef Battalion on RFD-TV. The organization was founded by Bill Broadie of Ashland, Kan., a fourth-generation cattleman and a Vietnam veteran.

The Fords decided that selling a designated bull for the Beef Battalion would be a fun way to raise money for a worthy cause and awareness of an organization they support.

The Ford are excited to see just how much money No. 21 will bring in the sale ring.

"He's ... got potential all on his own," Scott said. "Without being the All American Beef Battalion bull, he has the potential to bring $5,000 to $6,000."
