Their coaches gush over what impact Andy Janovich of Gretna and Jake Schany of Blair made on their football teams.

The pair of linebacker-running back combinations, each listed at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, head the All-Omaha Area small-school team as the honorary captains. Both were chosen last year as juniors.

Janovich ran for more than 800 yards and made 112 tackles as Gretna went unbeaten until losing in the final minute to Crete in the Class B semifinals.

"Andy's attitude, athleticism and work ethic make him a tremendous football player,'' Dragons coach Chad Jepsen said. "He is the hardest working athlete that I have ever coached.

"Andy was a true leader. Leading by example inspired his teammates to work hard and reach their potential as well. Andy is a rare player, in that I can honestly say I have never seen him take a play off."

Schany ran for 1,302 yards and 19 touchdowns in 10 games and set the Bears' career tackle record by leading the team in tackles for a third consecutive year.

"Jake is, by far, the best football player I have ever coached and the way he plays the game is a testament to his love of the game," Blair coach Darren Harsin said. "He plays with an energy, enthusiasm and passion that I could only compare to Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens."

Schany, who was one of the newspaper's Super Six college prospects, committed to Ohio University in midseason. Janovich is also a nationally ranked wrestler and is expected to choose between college options in both sports.

On the all-area offense are wide receiver Fernando Hildreth of Boys Town; tight end Jared Blum of Gretna; offensive linemen Shane Finley of Omaha Roncalli, Peyton Lange of Elkhorn, Hunter Hand of Platteview, T.J. Schindler of Blair and Brian Farley of Ralston; quarterback Brad Simpson of Ralston, running backs Graham Nabity of Elkhorn, Bryan Carlson of Platteview and Chris Hauck of Gretna; and kicker Payton Fluckey of Platteview.

On the defensive unit are linemen Ross Dzuris of Plattsmouth, Jordan Inman of Fort Calhoun, Matt Miller of Omaha Skutt and Derek Hill of Gretna; linebackers Ryan Michael of Elkhorn, Janovich and Schany; defensive backs Ben Rankin of Elkhorn, Josh Jochim of Platteview, Michael Wickham of Bennington, Daniel Feickert of Elkhorn; and punter Taylor McAllister of Plattsmouth.

Other repeat selections from the 2010 team are Hildreth, Dzuris and Wickham. Fluckey is the only junior chosen.

Players from 11 schools made the all-area team, which is chosen through observations of The World-Herald's sports staff and nominations by high school coaches. All coaches were emailed nomination forms.
