In mid-October, Omahans Mary Johnson and Katie Smith and their children, Monica and Nick Smith, went to Brownville, Neb., to check out the shops. Unfortunately, flooding had hurt business so badly this year that only a few of the shops were open. They thought it was a sad thing to see.
One shop that was open for business was the Quilted Kitty.
Nick, a Marine set to deploy to Afghanistan, was a good sport, said Mary, his mother-in-law, following the three women into the store even though a quilting shop wasn't his cup of tea. He even texted some of his friends saying they'd never believe where he was.
The shop's owner, Nanci Quick, had a nice talk with him though. She was interested in hearing all about the Marines and his coming deployment.
Suddenly she turned and pulled a beautiful patriotic-themed flag quilt off the shop wall.
Several people had wanted to buy the quilt, Quick said, but she was waiting for just the right person to come into the shop. She thanked Nick for his service to our country as she presented it to him.
"We all cried with amazement," Mary said. Their trip suddenly had turned joyous.
Nick left for Afghanistan on Oct. 31 and he took the quilt with him.
