The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce's latest recruiting tool — a 144-page photo- and story-packed magazine titled "Extraordinary Opportunities" — is being distributed to businesses and is available to the public.
Now in its fifth annual edition, the magazine is among the chamber's most powerful ways to spread the word about what Omaha has to offer, said Karla Ewert, chamber spokeswoman. The magazine goes to all chamber members, including local universities, who use it to recruit professionals and students.
It also is available to the public at the chamber's locations: 1301 Harney St. and 13206 Grover St.
Showcased are articles about an array of local companies, businesspeople, graduates, demographic statistics and information on lifestyle and arts attractions.
"It tells about people, our strengths, what is happening on the entrepreneurial scene," said Ewert. "This rounds out our efforts and says, 'Hey, this is why greater Omaha is a great place to do business.' "
The magazine also refers to coming international sporting events that will "keep the eyes of the world focused on Omaha" — including the NCAA men's basketball regionals in March, international equestrian jumping competition in April, the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in June and the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January 2013.
About 12,000 copies were published. The chamber contracted with the The World-Herald to create and publish the magazine, which also is available on CD and at www.omaha.com/chamber.
"Extraordinary Opportunities" joins other chamber marketing initiatives, including informational publications translated in nine different languages and detailed pamphlets about specific industries and topics.
This year for the first time, the chamber advertised in CNBC business magazine and the United Airlines magazine, reaching perhaps millions of travelers with the Top 10 reasons to select Omaha, said Ewert.
A prologue in Extraordinary Opportunities written by Jim Krieger, chairman of the chamber board, and David Brown, president, says that since 2004, the chamber's efforts have led to 313 economic development successes totaling more than $3.3 billion in new investments and 20,000 new or retained jobs.
