Restrictions planned to allow road repairs: The Iowa Department of Transportation has announced some lane and road closures in western Iowa.
U.S. Highway 6 will be closed for bridge construction work in both directions between Pottawattamie County roads L-52 and L-55 east of Council Bluffs beginning next Monday, weather permitting, according to the department's Council Bluffs construction office.
Motorists will be asked to follow the detour signs. The highway will reopen by Oct. 31.
Road construction work will cause traffic to be restricted to one lane in both directions of Interstate 29 between Modale and Mondamin from Monday to Oct. 24, weather permitting, according to the department.
In southwest Iowa, a restriction to two-lane traffic on Interstate 29 near Hamburg, Iowa, is expected to be in place until Nov. 14, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Northbound traffic is being diverted into one of the southbound lanes so that flood-related repairs can be made at the northbound bridge.
Below flood stage: The North Platte River has fallen below flood level for the first time since March in North Platte. National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Taylor said the river dropped to 5.66 feet over the weekend, a third of a foot under flood stage.
Weather service records say the river peaked at nearly 7.7 feet June 3 at the U.S. Highway 83 bridge near North Platte’s Cody Park. Flooding was fueled by heavy spring rains and a heavy snowmelt from Wyoming.
People are encouraged to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency by Tuesday’s deadline, even if they haven’t yet detected any flood damage. The damage could show up later.
