Alt rock fans should get our their calendars and cash. Another band is coming to town and the show looks to be quite a special performance.
Smashing Pumpkins will perform Oct. 11 at Slowdown. Yes, Slowdown, the 470-capacity rock club in north downtown, not a theater or arena.
The last time the band played in Omaha was in 1997. To more than 7,800 people.
This time around, the band was looking for something different.
“They wanted a small club show and liked the production quality at Slowdown,” said Marc Leibowitz of 1% Productions, which booked the show.
Smashing Pumpkins' tour started out as a short 12-date jaunt through major U.S. cities. But they scheduled a last-minute show in Omaha in between dates in Denver and Milwaukee. The band will follow the short tour with 26 dates in Europe. The shows are being called a warm-up tour to be followed by many more dates in 2012.
Smashing Pumpkins promised to play classic songs and deep cuts as well as new songs from their upcoming album, “Oceania,” which is due to be released in early 2012.
In the early '90s, the band sold millions of copies of its albums and had hits with “1979,” “Tonight, Tonight” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.”
More recently, the band released a 44-song album, “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope,” and is working on the new record.
Bill Corgan started the band with guitarist James Iha in 1988, but Corgan's the only original member left. Smashing Pumpkins also includes guitarist Jeff Shroeder, drummer Mike Byrne and bassist Nicole Fiorentino.
Not only is this one of the biggest names to play the stage at Slowdown, but it’s the most expensive ticket ever at Slowdown.
Tickets to the concert, $50, go on sale Saturday at onepercentproductions.com.
