2 campaigns target hunger

Two separate campaigns will bring together Omaha area residents young and old, in school and on the job, to collect food for the hungry.

Give the Boot to Child Hunger is a monthlong effort to benefit the Food Bank for the Heartland. It was launched Tuesday by Ak-Sar-Ben's River City Rodeo & Stock Show, in partnership with ConAgra Foods Inc.

The campaign was annouced during a press conference at Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle's office.

Companies are encouraged to give employees a casual dress day in exchange for food or cash donations on the Official Celebration of Omaha, Sept. 22 and 23. Individuals also can contribute online by visiting FoodBankHeartland.org.

The second campaign is intended to restock the shelves of Together, Inc. All schools in the Omaha school district are invited to participate in a food drive contest, "Making the Grade to End Hunger." The contest will run Sept. 19 to 30.

Elementary and middle-school students can bring cans of food to their homerooms during the campaign. As an incentive, Sam and Louie's New York Pizzeria will donate a pizza party to the winning classroom or homeroom at each participating elementary and middle school.

September is Hunger Action Month nationwide.
