Jack Heidel, chairman of the mathematics department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, will challenge incumbent Rep. Lee Terry in the 2012 primary.
The 72-year-old Heidel will announce his candidacy Wednesday.
Terry is seeking an eighth term representing the Omaha-centric district.
Another Republican, financial analyst and former University of Nebraska football player Brett Lindstrom, announced earlier this year that he, too, is running.
Heidel, who has already launched his campaign website, said Terry has not done enough to tackle the country’s massive debt. Heidel said he was “willing to do what must be done to insure the future fiscal health of our country.”
Only one Democrat, Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing, has so far announced his candidacy in the race.
