Big Harp returns for CD release

« Go

Big Harp is about to embark on a family road trip.

The band featuring husband-and-wife duo Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney is touring this fall, and the couple are taking their two young children along.

Former Baby Walrus drummer John Voris will join them, both because of his musical skills and his "awesome fit" with their kids.

"We have a minivan. We're gonna get a trailer," Stefanie said.

Even though you might see them around, the Senseneys don't live in Omaha anymore.

They now live in Los Angeles, but they return often to operate and raise funds for Omaha Girls Rock, a camp for young girls that teaches music and performance, as well as play shows as Big Harp.

Now it's time to release "White Hat," a new set of 11 songs, which comes out Sept. 13.

When they were in Omaha, the couple knew each other casually. But when Stefanie went on tour as a member of The Good Life, and Chris was the guitarist in the opening band, Art In Manila, she was swept off her feet.

Since then, they've had two children, gotten married and started a band. With Big Harp, Drootin-Senseney wanted more people to hear her husband's songs.

"It was me. It was because I've always loved Chris' songwriting and always thought other people should hear it," she said. "He played me some of his newer songs and I was like, 'We have to record it.'"

The album came together in about 10 days. They sat down several times during the week to pick out songs and quickly rehearse them. The recording itself took only three days with friend and Rilo Kiley alum Pierre De Reeder.

They sent it to Saddle Creek Records and a few other connections. After a time — "They had to think about it," she said — Saddle Creek wanted to release the album.

When they're not making music, Senseney works and Drootin-Senseney stays home with their children and works on Omaha Girls Rock.

Chris originally is from Valentine, Neb., and Stefanie from L.A.

Though projects often brings them back to Omaha, Drootin-Senseney said they're going to stick it out in L.A.

"We've talked about moving back so many times, but for me the biggest problems is weather. I'm from L.A. I'm a weather wuss," she said with a laugh. "But the other really big reason is my parents live here (L.A.). We don't have any family in Omaha. We are extremely fortunate that their grandparents are crazy for (our kids)."
