COUNCIL BLUFFS — A Pottawattamie County official can't explain why federal aid for individuals affected by flooding was awarded to Nebraska but denied to Iowa and South Dakota.
Matt Wilber, the county attorney and public information officer, said he was not sure why the Federal Emergency Management Agency granted the aid to Boyd, Burt, Cass, Dakota, Dixon, Douglas, Knox, Sarpy and Washington Counties in Nebraska.
Wilber said he believed the number of individuals affected and the amount of damage was higher in Iowa than in Nebraska.
"It is tough to read the tea leaves," he said. "Maybe we will get a different look on our appeal."
FEMA notified Gov. Terry Branstad on Aug. 4 that the individual aid request for Fremont, Harrison, Monona, Pottawattamie and Woodbury Counties was denied.
Branstad has said the decision will be appealed.
