WICHITA, Kan. — Nebraska Association athletes earned nine more medals Friday at the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics.
LaQue Moen-Davis and Jordan Flowers of Omaha led the way as they both earned silver medals. Moen-Davis was second in the young women's (ages 17-18) triple jump with a leap of 40-1014 while Flowers was second in the midget boys (11-12) long jump at 17-4.
One Nebraska Association record was set in the prelims when the Bellevue Breeze Track Club quartet of Garrett Teel, Dennis Barfield, Devin Barfield and Cody Rush finished fourth in the young men's 1,600-meter relay in 3:17.82. That topped the previous best of 3:19.85 by the Cornhusker Flyers Track Club in 2003.
They will get a chance to better that time on Sunday, the final day of competition in the meet at Wichita State.
Other Nebraska Association medalists: Sub-Bantam Boys (8-and-under): Shot put: 4, Matthew Medill, Lincoln Jets, 24-5½. Bantam Girls (9-10): Shot put: 7, Lexi Vertin, Hastings Saints, 23-9. Midget Girls (11-12): Discus: 7, Nia Station, Omaha, 79-8. Mini-javelin: 8, Kennedy Gochenour, CFTC, 95-10. Youth Girls (13-14): Discus: 5, Katelyn Gochenour, CFTC, 115-0. Young Women: Discus: 6, Michelle Wallerstedt, Omaha, 134-11. Young Men: Discus: 3, Brady Rutt, Hastings, 182-2.
