Nebraska athletes claim gold, records

WICHITA, Kan. — Nebraska Association athletes kicked off the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics with a pair of gold-medal and association-record performances.

LaQue Moen-Davis, an Omaha North graduate competing for the Midwest Striders won the Young Women's (ages 17-18) heptathlon by scoring 4,692 points during the first two days of the meet at Wichita State.

Moen-Davis had the best marks in the long jump (18-2), 100-meter hurdles (14.18) and high jump (5-7) and was second in the shot put (35-5) and 200 (25.21). Her total topped the previous record total of 4,674 points scored by Ashley Selig of Lincoln in 2001.

The other association record was set by Andy Vasquez of the Cornhusker Flyers Track Club, who won the Youth Boys (13-14) 3,000 race walk in 16:17.94, topping the 30-year-old record of 16:25.0 set by Kevin Williams of Lincoln.

Youth Girls: 3,000 race walk: 4, McKayla Roberts, CFTC, 19:06.20. Intermediate Girls: Heptathlon: 8, Kylie Gokie, Lincoln, 3,675 points. Young Men: Hammer: 4, Drew Staskiewicz, Omaha, 167-3. 2,000 steeplechase: 7, Britt Jensen, Fremont TC, 6:33.33.
