Jazz on the Green kicks off

Rhythmic beats sounded Thursday night in midtown Omaha's Turner Park, where Jazz on the Green kicked off its annual series.

Latin band Tiempo Libre opened its set with a classic Cuban number, “Guantanamera.”

About two dozen couples danced near the front of the stage.

The new dance floor is an improvement from last year, said Omahan Matt Wells, 31.

“We had to dance in the mud last year,” he said.

Wells was there meeting friends for a true citywide social hour.

At his side was Patty Lopez, 32, originally from California, who was impressed to see so many locals spread out on the park's grassy slope.

“What a great scene, “ she said. “It's wonderful to see Omaha celebrate diversity and culture.”

Concert organizers estimated attendance at 9,000.

Jazz on the Green will run for six consecutive Thursdays through Aug. 11.
