    JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Cotton shifting way back into high gear

After his historic victory at last month’s state high school meet, Kenzo Cotton took a couple of weeks off from his track workouts to prepare for the summer season.

Two weeks back into training, Cotton shook off a little more rust Sunday by earning his fourth gold medal at the Nebraska Association USA Track and Field Junior Olympics.

Cotton won the intermediate boys (ages 15 and 16) 200 meters at Burke Stadium — the same venue where Cotton became the first freshman in 97 years to win the all-class gold medal in that event.

His finish was a bit slower than his mark a month ago — 22.76 seconds — but this time a race at Burke was a steppingstone to bigger meets next month.

Following one more invitational meet Saturday — hosted by his club, the Bellevue Breeze, at Bellevue East — Cotton will compete July 9 and 10 in the Region 8 Junior Olympics in St. Paul, Minn. That’s the final step to the USATF National Junior Olympics July 26 through 31 in Wichita, Kan.

By that time, Cotton said he hopes to be right where he was last month when he posted a career-best 21.77 running for Papillion-La Vista. He also ran a 10.97 in the 100 to finish third in Class A.

“I’m just back to some mid-level training right now,” Cotton said. “I want to try to get my times as close as possible to where they were at state.”

On Saturday, Cotton won the 100 and the long jump before teaming with three Breeze runners to win the 400 relay. Cotton had never competed in the long jump, but he won the event with a leap of 22 feet, 7 inches.

That not only tied the oldest record on the Nebraska Association books — a mark first jumped in 1961 — but it would have placed him third in Class A.

Not bad for trying the event for the first time last week in practice.

“I was tired of doing four running events and I wanted to try something different,” Cotton said.

No records were set Sunday during the Nebraska meet, but there still were some other top-level performances.

Christian Sanderfer of Lincoln Southwest cleared 15 feet to win the young men’s (17-18) pole vault after winning the 110 hurdles Saturday. Sanderfer also won the decathlon at last week’s multi-event championships with 6,207 points.

Cotton’s younger brother Kurtis won the 100 and 200 in the midget boys (11-12) division. His time of 11.99 in the 100 and 24.74 in the 200 have him close to the marks Kenzo was running at his age.

Also in the midget division, Seth Hirsch of Omaha missed an association record in the 1,500 by 0.16 seconds by winning in 4:39.11. Hirsch set a national record in the 3,000 Saturday with a career-best 9:34.82.

In the girls meet, LSU recruit Alex Gochenour won two events, the 200 (25.56) and the high jump (5-5).
