    TRACK & FIELD

    Record-setting day at Junior Olympics

A national record in the first event and another great day for LaQue were among the highlights Saturday at the Nebraska USA Track and Field Junior Olympics.

After rain delayed the start of the meet at Burke Stadium by one hour, Seth Hirsch of the Omaha Racers made 7½ laps around the track look easy by winning the midget boys (ages 11-12) 3,000-meter run in 9:34.82.

    NEBRASKA JUNIOR OLYMPICS
    • When: Sunday
    • Where: Burke Stadium

The younger brother of Class A girls 3,200 champion Sidney Hirsch of Millard West knocked 3.7 seconds off the previous national record set by Chris Dominic of San Lorenzo, Calif., in Seattle in 1998. Hirsch also won the 800 in 2:26.17, more than 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Omaha North graduate LaQue Moen-Davis, a Texas A&M recruit, set two records in winning three gold medals in the young women’s division, for girls 17 and 18. Moen-Davis, who won four golds at the Nebraska state track meet in May, defeated Iowa state champion Alex Gochenour to win the 100 hurdles in 13.89 seconds.

That time was just one-hundredth of a second off the state record that Moen-Davis set in May, and tied the Nebraska Association record Gochenour set last season.

Moen-Davis had a strong race despite clipping the third hurdle and pulled away from Gochenour, who was second in 14.04.

Moen-Davis then bettered her own record in the triple jump by winning with a leap of 41-4. She also won the long jump with a leap of 18-5 and won the heptathlon June 12 at the state multi-event championship meet.

The Bellevue Breeze quartet of Dennis Barfield, Devin Barfield, Cody Rush and Garrett Teel also set a record by winning the young men’s 1,600 relay in 3:18.51.

Kenzo Cotton was the individual star of the boys portion of the meet.

Cotton, the 200 state champion as a freshman at Papillion-La Vista, won the intermediate boys (15-16) 100 in 11.35 and tied the oldest association record by jumping 22-7 to win the long jump.

That leap equaled the record set in 1961 by Steve Carson of Red Oak, Iowa.

Cotton also ran a leg on the Bellevue Breeze 400 relay team that won in 44.66. He is scheduled to run the 200 on Sunday when the meet concludes.

The top six finishers in each event qualify for the July 8 to 11 Region 8 Junior Olympics in St. Paul, Minn., the final step to the USATF National Junior Olympics July 26 to 31 in Wichita, Kan.
