Fans and donations will help to beat heat

The Salvation Army is collecting new fans through Sept. 2 for free distribution to qualified individuals. Applications are available at the Salvation Army Lied Renaissance Center, 3612 Cuming St., from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays.

Priority is given to people who are 50 or older and those with medical disabilities. Call 402-898-5860 for more information.

Donations of new fans and monetary donations to purchase fans can be dropped off at the Lied Renaissance Center. Monetary donations to the Summer Fan Program can be mailed to the Salvation Army, 3612 Cuming St., Omaha, NE 68131. To donate online, visit www.givesalvationarmy.org.


Lincoln and railroad topic of noon forum

Attend Thursday’s Omaha Press Club Forum to learn about President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Pacific Railroad Act into law. Omaha attorney Lawrence A. Dwyer will be the guest speaker.

The $15, noon to 1 p.m. event includes lunch. Nonmembers are welcome. All attendees must RSVP by calling 402-345-8008 or by emailing jeaniec@opc.omhcoxmail.com.


Homestead Days also an anniversary fete

In celebration of Homestead National Monument of America’s 75th anniversary as a National Park Service site, Homestead Days theme this year is Homestead Days 1936.

In honor of this theme, a Model A and Model T car show is planned Saturday and Sunday. Owners of cars from the 1930s and 1940s who are willing to display their cars at the monument’s Heritage Center should call Ranger Susan Cook at 402-223-3514.

Homestead National Monument of America is four miles west of Beatrice, Neb. There is no admission fee.


Benson is searching for backyard grillers

The Benson Backyard Barbecue Blast will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Benson Farmers Market, Military Avenue at Maple Street.

The contest is open to anyone who enjoys grilling in their backyard. The chief cook must be 21 or older. The cost is $10 per entry.

Discounted lessons offered at Kroc pool

The Salvation Army Kroc Center will offer discounted swimming lessons for children ages 5 to 12 from economically disadvantaged families.

Discounted lessons will begin Tuesday at the Kroc Center, 2825 Y St. Thirty-minute sessions will be available between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks. The cost is $10 per child for Kroc Center members and $15 per child for nonmembers.

Registrations will be accepted only from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Kroc Center.
