Benson market has safety events


Learn about fire safety, car seats, crime prevention, bike safety and more Saturday at the Benson Farmers Market.

Firefighters, police officers and others will be there with information and to answer questions between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Military Avenue between Maple and Binney Streets.

Safety Day is free and open to the public.


Youth mural project seeking teen artists

Teenagers interested in art or graffiti should sign up for the No-So Youth Mural Project for inner-city youths in north and South Omaha.

Teens can sign up at the South Omaha Boys and Girls Club, 5051 S. 22nd St. Teens younger than 18 will need parents to sign a form. The first meeting will be May 27.

La Casa del Pueblo and Black Men United are teaming on the project.


Walking the dog will be for charity

Dog owners and their canine companions will be walking Saturday in Omaha and Bellevue for an American Cancer Society Relay For Life fundraiser.

The Omaha Bark For Life event will begin with 9:30 a.m. registration at the Omaha Dog Park, 112th Street and West Maple Road. A closing ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m.

Participants may register that day for $25. Entry fee includes a pet neckerchief, treats and cleanup bags. Contests will be held for best trick and cutest dog. The walk will go on rain or shine. Water will be provided for all pets.

Bark For a Cure will be the same morning in Bellevue, at the Lied Activity Center, 2700 Arboretum Drive. The cost is $15 per canine participant. Sign-in will begin at 8 a.m., with the walk starting at 9:15. Register online at https://sites.google.com/site/rflthunderingherd.


Series addresses coping with grief

Pathways to Compassion Hospice will offer a free five-week grief series titled “On the Path to Healing.” It will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on consecutive Tuesdays starting May 31 at the Pathways office, 287 N. 115th St.

The group is open to anyone 18 and older who has suffered the death of a loved one. Experienced grief facilitators will lead the group.

Norway music, scenes featured at library

Join Jenny Solheim, James Solheim and Lorraine Duggin for a Norwegian dance and music performance at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Millard Library, 13214 Westwood Lane.

The performance will feature dances and music from different regions of Norway, accompanied by scenic views of each region. The event is free.

James Solheim is the author of “It’s Disgusting — and We Ate It” and “Born Yesterday.” Copies of the latter — his new children’s book — will be available at a 30 percent discount during the event.
