Hearing to discuss Ft. Calhoun

BLAIR, Neb. (AP) — Federal regulators will hold a hearing next month to discuss the failure of a key part during a test last June at the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant.

Omaha Public Power District officials will have a chance to talk with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission during the June 2 conference in Arlington, Texas.

OPPD officials have challenged the commission’s preliminary decision that the part’s failure represented a significant safety concern.

OPPD says three other backup parts worked fine, and the shutdown system needs only one of these electrical parts to work. Plus, he said, there are other ways to shut down the reactor.

OPPD replaced all four of these electrical parts as a precaution.
