Police to enforce helmet law

The Omaha Police Department has received grant money to enforce Nebraska’s motorcycle helmet law.

The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety awarded $34,427 to fund extra officers on the streets to ensure that motorcyclists are complying with Nebraska’s law.

Officers will be looking for motorcyclists not wearing a helmet or not properly wearing a helmet.

The enforcement effort is to begin Saturday. Operations will run through the summer at various times throughout the city. Operations will conclude in September.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that helmets reduce the risk of a fatal head injury by 40 percent and the risk of a death in a motorcycle crash by 37 percent.
