Notes about the chart:
Salary numbers are approximate. They’re based on media reports and USA Today’s annual compensation analysis for college head coaches, released in December 2010. Where applicable, numbers have been updated since USA Today’s release.
Salaries for some private universities, like Notre Dame, weren’t available.
Salaries don’t include performance bonuses, which vary by school.
USA Today separated coaches’ pay into two categories — university compensation and non-university compensation. The first category includes, among other things, base salary. The second category represents income from sources listed on the coach’s self-reported athletically related outside income report. Many schools, including Nebraska, aren’t required to disclose non-university compensation. For our purposes, we omitted the non-university category from the rankings.
