Millard North receiver Devin Bass returns a punt for a touchdown despite coverage by Lincoln Northeast defensive end James Hall during the third quarter as Millard North defeated Lincoln Northeast 24-0 on Nov. 5, 2010.

    All-Metro: From solid to spectacular

Until this year, Eric Crouch and Seth Olsen were his only players that Millard North coach Fred Petito considered worthy of nominating for Parade's High School All-America football team.

Devin Bass will be the third, Petito said.

“He's as explosive a player as we've had since Eric,'' the longtime Millard North coach said.

Bass and Omaha Burke quarterback Jimmie Forsythe are the honorary captains of The World-Herald's 47th All-Metro Conference football team. Forsythe led Burke to the state semifinals before getting stopped by Bass, who scored the winning touchdown on a long double-reverse in the final two minutes.

Millard North went on to win its first state title since 2005. Bass scored twice in the third quarter of a 28-20 win over Millard South.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder had season totals of 955 yards on 71 touches, eight touchdowns, a Class A-leading eight interceptions, nine pass breakups and 44 solo tackles out of 51 overall.

“He makes plays,'' Petito said. “He's really good in space. We needed to cover so much (on defense) that we didn't want to overload him on offense, but he got his touches with his kick returns, his catches.''

Bass had a “nice, solid junior year,'' the coach said, “then in the offseason, we said, ‘Devin, now's the time to step up and finish out making the big play. He channeled his energy to be great every day, Monday, Tuesday. He did that. He was very good during the week and it showed on Fridays.''

There are no Division I offers awaiting Bass — yet. College coaches started visiting high schools Dec. 1 and Iowa, Notre Dame and Kansas have inquired already, Petito said. “They see his (highlights) and say, ‘Wow, this is good tape.'”

Forsythe, a three-year starter for Burke, led Class A rushers with 1,789 yards in 11 games and broke the 3,000-yard mark for total offense by passing for 1,271.

The All-Metro first-team offense has Forsythe, Richard Wynne of Omaha Creighton Prep, Devin Reaves of Millard West and Cleo Miller of Omaha Benson in the backfield; Larves Jones of Omaha North and Ted Lampkin of Omaha Central as wide receivers; Damond Parker, Ryan Wheeler and Landon Arnold of Millard North, Nate Skold of Omaha Westside and Christian Spaccarotella of Millard South in the line and Danny Hamilton of Westside the place-kicker.

On defense are linemen Brandon Yost of Millard West, Hunter Greer of Burke and Jordan Wisdom of Millard South; linebackers Quentin Urban of Millard South, Ben Jansen of Millard North and Nate Kroupa of Burke; defensive backs Zach Leinbaugh of Millard West, Travis Green of Omaha North, Eddie Collins of Millard South, Iowa recruit Cole Fisher of Millard North and Bass; and punter Michael Finocchiaro of Westside.

Arnold, Hamilton and Greer are juniors on an otherwise all-senior first team.

All-Metro selections are based on observations by The World-Herald staff and nominations by high school coaches. All coaches were sent nomination forms via e-mail. Conference coaches met to select all-district teams and list players they deemed worthy of honorable mention all-district.
