Ryan Randall was the first two-time 2,000-yard rusher in Class B and went to the top of the career rushing chart in that class.

Blair coach Daren Harsin said there's a valuable nugget buried in Randall's numbers: only nine fumbles in close to 700 carries.

“Ryan was a very reliable, dependable ballcarrier who could run tough inside and had the speed to be a threat outside,” Harsin said.

A two-time All-Omaha Area selection, Randall joins the other repeater, Gretna defensive back Cole Spurgeon, as honorary captains of this year's team that honors local players below Class A level.

Randall's senior season of 2,019 yards and 27 touchdowns pushed his career totals to 5,281 yards — a shade more than three miles — and 73 touchdowns. He is second in both categories to Jeff Luebbe of Seward (1999 to 2001).

This year, Randall played more defense for the Bears. But as his workload increased on offense, he saw less time trying to make the tackles than elude them.

Spurgeon was a multi-threat for Gretna. He amassed 755 yards on kick returns and picked up 476 yards receiving. He received postseason nominations on both sides of the ball.

On the all-area offense are wide receivers Matt Raymond of Elkhorn and Michael Wickham of Bennington; linemen Troy Pilkington of Elkhorn, Pat Dutton and Chris Long of Blair, Ross Dzuris of Plattsmouth and Dylan Tolbert of Omaha Gross; quarterback Trevor Bohn of Bennington; backs Caleb Wallingford of Elkhorn, Brooks Erhart of Platteview and Randall; and kicker Sean Wade of Blair.

On the defensive unit are linemen Jason Nekola of Ralston, Gabe Terry of Boys Town and Eddie Ridder of Elkhorn Mount Michael; linebackers Jake Schany of Blair, Grant Harrill of Boys Town, Ryan Ludlow of Plattsmouth and Andy Janovich of Gretna; defensive backs Fernando Hildreth of Boys Town, Conor Sapp of Ashland-Greenwood and Spurgeon; and punter Jake Rauterkus of Mount Michael.

Hildreth is a sophomore. Wickham, Dzuris, Terry, Schany and Janovich are juniors.

Players from 11 schools made the all-area team, which is chosen through observations of The World-Herald staff and nominations by high school coaches. All schools received nomination forms via e-mail to their athletic directors.
