    Nebraska’s Niles Paul, trying to fight off cornerback Isiah Barfield, No. 19, in the second quarter, led both teams with seven catches for 79 yards.

    NU-Kansas: Tracking the offense

    World-Herald staff writer Jon Nyatawa takes an in-depth look at the NU offense during the Huskers' 20-3 win over Kansas.

    * * *

    NU STAR

    Niles Paul. The senior receiver had just two catches in Nebraska’s past two games. But he emerged as a reliable target in the passing game Saturday, finishing the night with seven receptions for 79 yards.

    HIGHLIGHT

    I-back Roy Helu took the zone-read handoff and darted upfield, seemingly trapped by a couple of converging defenders. But the shifty senior cut back quickly toward the sideline, kept his balance and powered forward, scoring on the 20-yard run to give NU a 14-0 lead.

    BUSTED PLAY

    A conservative offensive approach didn’t result in many blatant errors. But on the first possession after halftime, Taylor Martinez zoned in on Brandon Kinnie for too long. Tyler Patmon left Paul and stepped in for the interception.

    OUR TAKE

    Nebraska started slowly and never could figure out a way to find its rhythm, at least not to the level that’s been on display at times this season. There were turnovers and penalties. Plus, the Huskers weren’t explosive either — their longest play from scrimmage went for 26 yards. But they did battle through the inconsistency to put together a few lengthy drives, converting enough scoring opportunities keep the game out of reach.
