Omaha's mayor just hired a city bike buddy at a $65,000-a-year salary at the exact same time he is asking citizens to cough up more money because the city is in such dire financial jeopardy.
The new bike guy wants to make streets safe enough for toddlers to bike on. He seems unaware that a toddler on an Omaha street more likely would be swallowed whole by our potholes than delivered safely to some destination on a bike.
Chalk all this up to the inexperience of a new hire, which is understandable, and to the political tone-deafness of the mayor, which was evident a long time ago.
But there are points that may reduce the ire this hire has raised.
