Front 4 sets tone over No. 4 Rockets

SYRACUSE, Neb. — Wahoo unleashed its front four early and often Friday night, setting the tone for a 36-0 victory against Capitol Conference rival Syracuse.

Defensive end Jacob Subbert had four sacks in the first quarter, including a safety on the game's third play.

Class C-1 No. 5 Wahoo (2-0) led 16-0 before the first quarter was over and 30-0 at halftime. Two third-quarter field goals put the game into running-clock mode with the lead larger than 35 points.

“We knew we had to stomp on them early,” Wahoo coach Chad Fox said. “We came out and played aggressive right away, taking control of the game.

“Those were all keys we felt we had to do to neutralize anything they had with a home-field advantage. You're talking about a team that's won a lot of games the past couple years and lost only once here.”

Syracuse went 21-2 in 2008 and 2009, and two of those wins were against the Warriors, including a 12-6 victory last year in which it had eight takeaways.

“We've had some tussles,” Fox said. “This win felt good to get.”

Wahoo's shutout was its second of the season. The Warriors held the No. 4 Rockets (1-1) to 2 yards rushing and 73 passing.

Syracuse hasn't scored a touchdown in two games. It beat Lincoln Lutheran 3-0 in its season opener.

“Wahoo manhandled us up front,” Syracuse coach Rick Nordhues said. “I'm very concerned about our offense.”

Syracuse was without its starting running back, Sam Hillman, who Nordhues said hasn't been healthy since the start of practice.

“He's a leader and a tough kid. I think he could have ground out some first downs,” Nordhues said.

Wahoo got two touchdowns apiece from senior Greg Milliken and junior Seth Stewart in the 30-point first half.

Milliken, who topped the 200-yard mark against Auburn, ran for 67 yards on nine carries before tweaking a hamstring in the second quarter. He didn't play in the second half.

Senior quarterback Sean Lindgren led all ballcarriers with 87 yards on 11 carries and threw for 77 yards. His 38-yard option keeper set up the Warriors' first touchdown.

After scoring drives of 43, 15, 57 and 1 yard in the first half, Wahoo managed a pair of Ethan Harders field goals in the second half.

“We played a really good first half,” Fox said. “I wasn't really happy with our second-half efforts.”
