LINCOLN — Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., might have a second challenger on the ballot for his western Nebraska seat.

Dan Hill of Grand Island submitted petitions Tuesday to the Nebraska Secretary of State's Office in hopes of qualifying as an independent candidate in the 3rd Congressional District.

Hill needs 2,000 valid signatures of registered voters in the district to be placed on the ballot, according to the Secretary of State's Office. Validating the petitions should be completed by Tuesday.

Smith, who is seeking a third term, is opposed by Democrat Rebekah Davis of Alliance.

A Libertarian candidate for state auditor, Michele Sallach-Grace of La Vista, also submitted petitions Tuesday. She needs the signatures of 25 Libertarians to qualify for the ballot.

In another race, no candidate has filed petitions to oppose State Sen. Steve Lathrop in his re-election bid to represent the Ralston and Millard areas. Last month, John Lillis dropped out of the race, citing work and family obligations.

The deadline to submit petitions to qualify for the general election ballot was 5 p.m. Wednesday.
