LINCOLN — Coach Bo Pelini indicated Saturday that Nebraska may already have a starting quarterback in place for the Huskers’ season opener against Western Kentucky.
Pelini wouldn’t discuss specifics. Ever since practices began earlier this month, no NU coach has detailed the staff’s evaluation process of the team’s three-man race for the top QB job.
But it appears that Pelini has an idea of how snaps will be distributed among senior Zac Lee, sophomore Cody Green and redshirt Taylor Martinez when the Huskers’ season starts at 6 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Stadium.
“We have our plan,” Pelini told reporters Saturday, “but you’ll just have to wait and see what it is.”
Pelini said choosing the team’s starter is based on a number of factors, though he declined to elaborate on the criteria.
Lee started 12 games last year, but while he recovered from offseason surgery, two athletic youngsters emerged as legitimate contenders. Lee, Green and Martinez entered preseason camp as the frontrunners to earn the No. 1 quarterback spot, according to the NU staff.
Lee and Green haven’t participated in media interviews since the start of fall camp. Martinez hasn’t played in a game, so program rules prevent him from speaking to reporters. Pelini declined Saturday to provide a three-week progress report for the quarterbacks.
“I’ve seen progress made at every position,” Pelini said when asked to discuss the quarterbacks’ improvement. “I feel good about where we are as a football team right now.”
