LINCOLN — Former Washington tight end Kavario Middleton will not enroll at Nebraska after narrowly failing to meet transfer requirements, his ex-high school coach said.
Middleton, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound former Parade All-American, planned to start school at NU on Monday after he was kicked off the team at UW in July. He was set to walk on this semester and sit out of games while working to meet coach Bo Pelini's requirements to earn a scholarship in January.
“It was frustrating for him, because he was trying like crazy,” said Lakes High School coach Dave Miller, who has assisted Middleton with the transfer. “Nebraska's been great about the whole deal. He's academically eligible to play football, on track to graduate, but not to transfer in to the school.
“It came down to one class — one C-minus. He needed a C.”
Middleton completed the course this summer. He will likely look to a smaller school, perhaps in the Football Championship Subdivision, Miller said.
“It's too bad, because I think Nebraska was a good fit and he really could have helped,” Miller said. “But they've got their rules, and we respect that.”
