Family Fun Day at Joslyn a hit

Art museums hit home for Joel Gunderson.

The Lafayette, Ind., native’s grandmother was a volunteer at an art museum back home, and it’s because of her that he has a membership at Omaha’s Joslyn Art Museum.

Gunderson, who now lives in Council Bluffs, was at Joslyn Sunday with his wife for the museum’s Family Fun Day.

About 1,600 attended the free event, which centered on the museum’s “Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism” exhibit from the Brooklyn Museum.

“(Impressionism) leaves a little bit to the imagination,” Gunderson said.

Museumgoers were treated to music by harpist Mary Bircher, the film “Linnea in Monet’s Garden,” and a station where people created their own artistic masterpieces.

A barrage of children pasted little colored paper squares onto sheets of paper. Visitors also took part in an artistic representation of Monet’s Garden. They created lily pads and flowers that were floated in Joslyn’s outdoor reflecting pool.

Joan Bowen and her daughter Jamie, 12, were stirred Sunday by Ballet Nebraska’s performance of a pas de deux from the classical ballet “French Songs.”

Erika Overturff, artistic director for Ballet Nebraska, said Family Fun Day offered visitors different art venues.

“It gives them a little taste of dance and a chance to experience a lot of different things,” she said.

Jamie starts ballet dancing later this year and was amazed by the ballerina.

“It’s kind of impressive that she can stand on flat pointe shoes and not hurt herself.”
