Carson foundation donates $250,000
The John W. Carson Foundation, established by legendary late-night talk show host and Nebraska native Johnny Carson, has donated $250,000 to the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. It is the second such gift, bringing the total from the Carson Foundation to $750,000.
The endowment is the private partner with the State of Nebraska to support the programs and projects of the Nebraska Humanities Council and the Nebraska Arts Council. The endowment is currently conducting a $5 million fundraising campaign in response to a challenge from the Nebraska Legislature.
“The Carson Foundation’s generous gift represents a strong vote of confidence for the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and its statewide mission,” said Pamela Snow, executive director of the endowment.
The Nebraska Cultural Endowment was created in 1998 when the legislature set aside $5 million to endow the arts and humanities.
Carson grew up in Norfolk and attended the University of Nebraska. For 30 years, he was the comic host of “The Tonight Show,” retiring in May 1992. He died in 2005 in Los Angeles. The Carson foundation was created in 1981 and has continued to support charitable causes since Carson’s death.
