1:54 p.m.: Redshirt freshman Taylor Martinez did not participate in practice Thursday, but Nebraska's head coach said Friday morning that the absence was excused.
Bo Pelini declined to say why Martinez missed practice a day ago. But Pelini said he “knew exactly where (Martinez) was.”
Martinez was back with the team Friday morning.
The speedster from Corona, Calif., is one of the three leading candidates battling for the starting quarterback spot. He's splitting reps with senior Zac Lee and sophomore Cody Green.
A few other notes from Pelini, who spoke after the first of two practices scheduled Friday:
> Junior Jermarcus Hardrick has returned to the practice field. According to Pelini, the 320-pound offensive lineman suffered from severe cramping during Monday's practice and the medical staff couldn't rehydrate his body quickly enough. The situation worsened from there. Pelini said Hardrick's fine now, though.
> Pelini said defensive tackle Faron Klindgelhoefer will have surgery, so the junior from Amherst, Neb., will be replaced on the 105-man roster.
> The Huskers have improved after nearly a week's worth of work, according to Pelini. He's encouraged by the camp so far. “I think we're getting better in a lot of areas. I'm seeing progress.”
> The players were allowed to tackle one another for the first time Thursday, so they did scrimmage a bit. Pelini said they'll probably scrimmage again Saturday. A major live session will happen eventually, just not yet. “Little by little,” Pelini said. “We're kind of easing into it.”
