The 5-foot-10, 235-pounder is one of the Husker fullbacks. Remember them? Last season, the junior walk-on from Neligh, Neb., started four games and played in all 14. Legate did not have a carry, but did catch three passes, including a 3-yarder for a touchdown against Arkansas State. His sophomore season included being honored as a second-team Academic All-Big 12 pick.
* * *
Q: You still think back much about your first touchdown?
A: No, that was last year. Like I’ve always said, it’s team first. I just want to win. I don’t care how it happens.
Q: What’s a guy like redshirt freshman C.J. Zimmerer bring to the position?
A: He’s learning. He’s definitely got the body. He’s definitely got the work ethic. As long as he keeps working at it, he’ll be good. He’s a good kid, too.
Q: What did the Academic All-Big 12 honor mean to you?
A: That was cool. I guess I haven’t really thought about it, but someday I’ll look back and it’ll mean a lot to me. My mom’s a teacher, so on the academic side of things, she’s always pushing me.
Q: What’s worse, summer conditioning or fall camp?
A: Fall camp is definitely a little tougher, but at least you know (the season) is getting closer once fall camp starts. So that’s what helps you get through the tougher times, I guess.
Q: Who’s the Odd Couple on the team, as far as friends or roommates?
A: I used to live with them, but it’s probably Zac Lee and Matt May. One’s a quarterback. One’s a linebacker. One’s from California. One’s from small-town Nebraska. Matt’s kind of a quiet kid. Zac’s kind of more outgoing. They’re like completely opposite people.
Q: Anyone ever say you look like teammate Will Compton?
A: No. Really, you think I do? Nobody’s ever said that, but all right.
