LINCOLN — Want a resolution to Nebraska's position battle at quarterback? Don't count on one soon.
As stated at multiple points in the offseason, coach Bo Pelini reiterated Wednesday that he has no timetable for naming a starting QB. And he also has no real interest in keeping outsiders up to date with the staff's evaluation process.
Asked about the competition among senior Zac Lee, sophomore Cody Green and redshirt freshman Taylor Martinez, Pelini said all three are even through five days of camp.
Judging from Pelini's response to all of the quarterback-related inquiries after practice Wednesday, the third-year coach might continue to rely on that vague review until he makes a decision — and that seems unlikely to happen any time soon.
“I know you guys don't want to hear that, but that's the facts,” Pelini told reporters Wednesday. “That's the way it is. When we know, we'll let you know. But until then, there's not really much to talk about.”
‘New stuff' for fullbacks
Tyler Legate said Wednesday it's too soon to predict how the fullbacks will figure into the NU offense, but did say he expects their role to change “a little bit.”
“I'm not going into specifics on it yet because I don't know for sure what we're going to do with it,” he said. “But there's some new stuff.”
Legate is a junior who returns after starting four games last season and catching three passes, including a 3-yard touchdown against Arkansas State. Among those with him is C.J. Zimmerer, a scholarship recruit who redshirted last season.
“If they need us, they need us,” Legate said. “If they don't, they don't. You just got to know your role, because sometimes it's the biggest plays of the game you've got to be in for and you've always got to be ready.”
Suh's iPads only for e-mail — for now
The NU players have a new technological toy in their lockers, but they haven't yet been granted permission to utilize all of its features.
Former Nebraska star Ndamukong Suh donated 123 iPads to the Husker locker room, requesting that the slim, touch-screen computers replace the nameplates at the top of each player's personal cubbyhole.
The iPads are installed and operational. But sophomore linebacker Will Compton said he and his teammates are permitted to use Apple's $500 gizmo only for e-mail.
He assumes that will change, though.
“They're awesome,” Compton said. “You can't get any better than that. ... I think within a few months we'll be able to do more.”
NU ranked No. 12 by magazine
The Huskers have garnered more preseason hype from the national media.
The annual Playboy college football preview magazine, scheduled to be released Friday, has Nebraska ranked No. 12. It also names senior defensive back Prince Amukamara as one of its 28 All-Americans.
Amukamara, also a preseason All-America pick by Lindy's and Phil Steele, was named to the Thorpe Award watch list earlier this month. He had five interceptions and 11 pass breakups last year.
In Playboy's Top 25 rankings, Nebraska is one of three Big 12 teams listed (Texas is No. 2 and Oklahoma is No. 9). The top team is Ohio State. Iowa is rated fifth.
