With Mike McNeill’s move to receiver, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound sophomore is the top returning tight end target in Nebraska’s offensive attack, based on statistics. Reed caught six passes for 54 yards as a redshirt freshman a season ago, including a 22-yard grab against Baylor. The Shawnee, Kan., native is still seeking his first collegiate touchdown. McNeill, in the spot Reed is expected to assume, finished with four last season.

Q: How did the summer go?
A: It was good for everyone. There was a lot of competition. I feel like we really got better.
Q: Is it a grind-it-out mentality during the offseason?
A: The summer is actually not too bad. You put in your work and take a couple of classes, but there’s more free time and stuff. I think it’s pretty fun actually.
Q: What’s the toughest part of those summer workouts?
A: Those tire drills or running in the stadium. It’s got to be one of those two.
Q: Is the Texas game the one that’s circled on your calendars this season?
A: You could say there’s one big game because of the way they got us. But for me, I’m looking at the first game. Coach Bo has us not worried about Texas at this moment. Right now the opener is more important.
Q: When you sit down to play a college football video game, who is Nebraska’s starting quarterback?
A: The last time I played it was Zac (Lee). They don’t do Taylor (Martinez) and his speed justice on the game.
Q: Is this team worthy of being in the Top 10 in the country?
A: I think so, yeah. I think we’re ready to be back there.
