    Norfolk athlete wins steeplechase

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Two Nebraska Association athletes won national championships in the first three days of competition at the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics.

    Melissa Parks of the Norfolk Optimists won the young women’s (ages 17-18) 2,000-meter steeplechase by more than eight seconds in 7:13.14. Katelyn Gochenour of the Cornhusker Flyers Track Club won the midget girls (11-12) discus with a toss of 103-2.

    Other medalists:

    Bantam Girls (10-and-under): Triathlon, 8, Maranda Saltzman, Bellevue Breeze, 912 points. Midget Girls: High jump, 7, Kathleen Medill, Lincoln Jets, 4-9. Midget Boys: 1,500 race walk, 2, Andy Vasquez, CFTC, 8:23.99. Intermediate Girls (15-16): High jump, 6, Taryn Derickson, Breeze, 5-3. Intermediate Boys: Decathlon, 4, Jett Baker, Breeze, 5,124 points.
