Track and Field: Nebraska Association athletes win 8 golds

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Nebraska Association athletes won eight gold medals Friday at the Region 8 USA Track and Field championship meet.

Competition during the first two days of the meet at Simpson College centered on the multi-events, steeplechase, race walks and hammer throw.

Nebraskans won four multi-event titles and two race walk championships to go with victories by Melissa Parks of Norfolk in the Young Women’s (ages 17-18) 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:28.73 and Drew Staskiewicz of Omaha in the Young Men’s hammer (183-9).

Parks’ sister, Stephanie, was third in that steeplechase race in 8:24.02, and three other Omaha throwers also medaled in the hammer — Hunter Croshorn of Omaha Burke (4th, 111-11), Logan Twist of Elkhorn (5th, 102-11) and Alexander Beideck of Ralston (6th, 102-2).

Bantam Girls (9-10): Triathlon: 1, Maranda Saltzman, Bellevue, 859 points; 3, Kennedy Berreckman, Cozad, 771.
Bantam Boys: Triathlon: 4, Cole Mingo, Omaha, 349 points.
Midget Girls (11-12): Pentathlon: 1, Jordan Kuck, Lincoln, 2,232 points.
Midget Boys: 1,500 race walk: 1, Andy Vasquez, Omaha, 8:23.09. Pentathlon: 6, Jackson Selig, Lincoln, 1,148 points.
Youth Girls (13-14): 3,000 race walk: 1, McKayla Roberts, Omaha, 19:38.90.
Youth Boys: Pentathlon: 3, Joseph Krajicek, Papillion, 1,687 points; 4, Matthew Mulholland, Bellevue, 1,007.
Intermediate Boys (15-16): Decathlon: 3, Jett Baker, Bellevue, 5,004 points; 4, Mitch Mulholland, Bellevue, 4,426.
Young Women (17-18): Heptathlon: 1, Clara Nichols, Omaha, 3,389 points. 2,000 steeplechase: 1, Melissa Parks, Norfolk, 7:28.73; 3, Stephanie Parks, Norfolk, 8:24.02.
Young Men: 2,000 steeplechase: 1, Britt Jensen, Fremont, 6:42.41. Decathlon: 2, John Ingold, Bellevue, 4,972 points.
