Don’t call his band big.
Lyle Lovett, who appears in Omaha Monday, always fronts his popular Large Band.
The four-time Grammy winner is currently touring the country to promote his recent album, “Natural Forces.” The album is an imaginative mix of musical styles, surveying everything from country and folk to blues and bluegrass. Lovett also tosses in a little rockabilly for good measure.
But what distinguishes this album is the sophistication and sensitivity of its lyrics.
Like fellow country/folk songwriter John Prine, Lovett is a gifted storyteller.
In the title song from “Natural Forces,” Lovett sings convincingly of a truck driver/cowboy. The guy drinks his Coors Light while watching news reports about “all the sacrifices and the death and war. Lord I pray that I’m worth fighting for.”
Also like Prine, Lovett never misses an opportunity to be funny.
In “Farmer Brown/Chicken Reel,” Lovett has a different take on the farmer of popular children’s board book fame. This Farmer Brown wants to choke his chicken.
Lovett’s appearance gets Omaha Performing Arts’ 2010-11 season off to an early start. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
