K.C. linebacker gives NU first 2012 pledge

LINCOLN — Nebraska reportedly has its first recruit for 2012.

Michael Rose, a 6-foot, 210-pound linebacker, gave the NU coaching staff an oral commitment recently, not long after attending a midsummer camp in Lincoln, according to the Rivals.com recruiting website for Nebraska.

Husker coaches can’t present Rose with an official written scholarship offer until Sept. 1. And the junior-to-be from Kansas City, who plays at Rockhurst High School, can’t sign a letter of intent for 19 months.

But Rose has apparently made up his mind. Attempts to reach him Tuesday were unsuccessful.

His early decision isn’t unprecedented. Ryne Reeves, an offensive lineman from Crete, announced his decision to play college football at Nebraska in June 2009. Reeves, who was 16 when he pledged to NU, can’t sign with the Huskers until February.

Reeves is one of 13 known members of Nebraska’s 2011 recruiting class.
