All of the rain and lightning Sunday both shortened and lengthened the final day of competition at the Nebraska Association USA Track and Field Junior Olympics championship meet.

It took longer to complete all of the events at Burke Stadium as the weather conditions forced events to be delayed as much as five hours. But once things got started, fewer events were contested as some didn’t even need to be conducted.

If there were six or fewer athletes in an event, all of the participants in those were advanced to the July 8-11 Region 8 meet in Indianola, Iowa. Six is the maximum number of athletes who can move on to regionals from individual association meets.

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, there were still several outstanding performances. A pair of association records were bettered, including one by Eli Zoucha of the West O Throws club in the Midget Boys (11-12) shot put.

Zoucha topped the association record for the third time this season when he threw 49 feet, 10 inches. He now is just a half-inch away from adding six feet to the previous record set in 1982.

The other record-topping performance came in the Intermediate Boys (15-16) 200-meter dash. Devin Barfield of the Bellevue Breeze cruised to a winning time of 22.34, 0.09 seconds faster than the 22.43 run by Brijesh Lawrence of Omaha in 2005.

Barfield also won the 100 in 11.25 and the 400 in 50.36.

Iowa state high school champion Alex Gochenour of Logan-Magnolia defeated five of the top Nebraska Class A sprinters — Brianna McGhee, Maia Reynolds, Breunna McCarty, Neeia Cooperwood and Janesha McGhee — in the Young Women’s (17-18) 200. Gochenour won in 24.81, well ahead of runner-up Brianna McGhee (25.13).

Kathleen Medill of Lincoln narrowly missed the record in winning the Midget Girls (11-12) high jump. Medill cleared 5-1, just 1½ inches from the record set by Kelly Cizek of Omaha in 1991.
