Ed center meets 'green' code

By Michaela Saunders
World-Herald Staff Writer

Nebraska has its first early childhood education center that meets the standards of the U.S. Green Building Council for environmental responsibility.

The Educare at Indian Hill, 31st and W Streets, was recognized this week with a LEED Silver Certification. That means the building meets internationally recognized standards as a “green” building.

Several factors are considered, including sustainable building materials, whether those materials are produced regionally, indoor air quality, natural lighting and efficiency in energy use including water, electricity and natural gas.

The Educare in South Omaha serves 200 children from birth to age 5. It is the first Omaha Public Schools building and the first Educare center nationally to achieve LEED recognition.

RDG Planning and Design were the architects of the building, which was paid for by the Buffett Early Childhood Fund and other Educare partners. The center opened in August.
