2:55 p.m.: The Insight Bowl's climb up the pecking order in the Big 12 became official Thursday.
In conjunction with a new multiyear agreement with ESPN and a four-year deal with the Big 12 and Big Ten, the Insight Bowl will now have the third selection from the Big 12 after the Bowl Championship Series teams are determined. It will have the third or fourth pick from the Big Ten.
The Insight Bowl will select its Big 12 team after the Cotton Bowl and Alamo Bowl. Among the games it will leapfrog is the Holiday Bowl, where Nebraska finished its 2009 season.
Participating universities will earn a record $6.65 million in payouts.
Previously, the Insight Bowl had the sixth selection from each conference, and last year featured Iowa State playing Minnesota on the NFL Network.
The 2010 Insight Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 28 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CST.
In other bowl news involving the Big 12, the Holiday Bowl recently announced a new sponsorship with Bridgepoint Education. It was the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl when Nebraska played Arizona last December in San Diego.
