Creighton will enforce the buyout clause in former coach Dana Altman's contract.
Altman resigned Saturday in order to become the head coach at Oregon. Creighton Athletic Director Bruce Rasmussen refused to divulge when asked Tuesday whether Altman's contract contained a buyout clause. As a private institution, Creighton's coaching contracts are not public information.
But a person with knowledge of the situation told The World-Herald that Altman's contract did contain a buyout clause that carried a substantial penalty should he leave the school to take another coaching position.
Creighton is currently negotiating with Iowa State over the $800,000 buyout clause in new coach Greg McDermott's contract with ISU. When asked if Altman's buyout figure was similar to McDermott's, the source said, “It's not as much.”
“But when it's all said and done after the negotiations,'' the source said, “I would say it would be pretty much a wash.''
