10:58 p.m.: Sean Fisher, Will Compton and Eric Martin all got chances last season and surely are among the leading candidates at linebacker for Nebraska next fall.
Just don’t count out one other sophomore-to-be.
NU safety P.J. Smith on Friday joined those who have said Alonzo Whaley is putting together some good work in spring practice.
“Whaley’s flying around, having fun, getting better,” Smith said Friday. “They’re all competing.”
Fisher and Compton combined for 14 starts as redshirt freshmen, and both ranked among the Huskers’ top 12 in tackles. Martin contributed on special teams as a true freshman and is considered among those who could help replace Phillip Dillard.
Whaley is the native of Madisonville, Texas, who quietly keeps plugging away.
“I’ll go up and watch film with Eric (Hagg) and he’s like, ‘Gosh, Whaley’s really getting it. Whaley’s really getting it,’ ” Smith said. “After being in the system two years, it’s starting to come to him. It’s making it that much easier.”
In other linebacker news Friday, NU coach Bo Pelini said Micah Kreikemeier is sidelined by an elbow problem.
“He just basically has some debris in there we’ve got to get cleaned up,” Pelini said.
