Most of Nebraska is at heightened risk of grass fires because of the low humidity, warming temperatures and windy conditions.
Shawn Jacobs, meteorologist with the National Weather Service at North Platte, said Monday that he expects the concern to remain through midweek.
Nearly the entire state of Nebraska was at an extreme risk of grassland fires Monday.
Firefighters were especially on alert because of the windy conditions throughout the state.
Fire risk tends to be seasonal and is greater at this time of year because grasses have not yet greened up for the spring, said Bill Taylor, also a meteorologist at North Platte.
