    MEN'S BASKETBALL

    Lawson's game, range expand

5:15 p.m.: Creighton center Kenny Lawson connected on another 3-point basket Saturday and now stands a mere 369 behind Kyle Korver's school record.

Don't expect the 6-foot-9 junior to start launching away in attempt to catch Korver.

“It's not something I want to get used to doing,” Lawson said sheepishly. “I'm still a center.”

Lawson made his first 3-point shot of his Bluejay career in a Feb. 13 loss to Illinois State. He came back in Saturday's 78-58 win over Loyola to make 1 of 2 shots from beyond the arc.

Lawson always has shown a nice touch on his mid-range shots. Creighton coaches started talking to him last month about possibly increasing his range and even put in a play to possibly free him up for a 3-point attempt or two.

“In practice, he's shooting it as well as anybody,” Creighton coach Dana Altman said. “I'm not going to tell him not to shoot it if he gets an open look. He's 2 for 3, and we don't have anyone else shooting at 66 percent. Right now, I'm not going to tell Kenny not to take a shot any time he has one. He's got the green light wherever he's at.”

Lawson has been Creighton's most consistent player throughout the 14-14 season. He leads the team in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (6.5). He's shooting 54.2 percent from the field and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line. He is tied for the Missouri Valley Conference lead in blocked shots at 1.4 per game.

And, he's not content with what he's done to this point.

“He's been putting in a lot of extra work,” Altman said. “He's been the first one to practice and the last one to leave the last month now. It's good to see him put in that kind of effort and be rewarded for it. I hope the rest of the players recognize it and are willing to pay the same price.”
