many hands tried to steer interstate decisions
On Feb. 17, 1959: A move to require that the Interstate west of Grand Island be built along the route of Highway 30 “wherever feasible” was killed in a legislative committee, leaving the location decision up to the Nebraska and federal roads departments.
1900: Omaha officials were campaigning for a bond proposition for the city to acquire ownership of the water works plant. Officials claimed the move would reduce regular taxes by 10 percent.
1950: “Samson and Delilah,” touted as Cecil B. DeMille's masterpiece, was playing at the Paramount.
1959: Greece's Crown Prince Constantine spent a day visiting Omaha and the Strategic Air Command.
1983: Caril Ann Fugate, who served 18 years in prison for her part in Charles Starkweather's 1958 murder spree, announced she would speak out on a nationally syndicated television program. Fugate said she had been “quiet long enough” in explaining her appearance on the show, “Lie Detector,” hosted by F. Lee Bailey.
