Huskers renew interest after Marsh commitment

Nebraska took a renewed interest Monday in Millard South quarterback Bronson Marsh, one day after Marsh committed to a University of Nebraska at Omaha scholarship offer.

“(Assistant) Coach (Barney) Cotton talked with him and said there was at least a grayshirt possibility being open,” Millard South coach Andy Means said. “He was told Coach (Bo) Pelini would get hold of him (Monday night).”

As a grayshirt, Marsh would join the program at the semester break in January and would count against the Huskers' 2011 recruiting class.

“He got a great offer from UNO,” Means said. “As of right now (Monday afternoon), he's still committed.”

As the Marsh saga unfolded, UNO added to its list of football recruiting commitments by getting pledges from a pair of relatively unheralded recruits from Millard North.

Tim Semisch is a 6-foot-8, 240-pound tight end who turned down Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) offers despite receiving no postseason honors.

Ben Renshaw is a 6-5, 210-pounder who played cornerback and wide receiver, among other positions, for the Mustangs and earned all-district honors.

“They're pretty raw, but they're athletic,” Millard North coach Fred Petito said. “Their best ball is ahead of them.”

Petito said Southeast Missouri State and North Dakota were among those who offered Semisch scholarships. He said UNO was one of several Division II schools pursuing Renshaw.

“Those guys are projects, but there's a chance one day you'll see that UNO got a couple of steals,” Petito said.

Those two join a recruiting class that includes some higher profile names, including Marsh and Kansas City-area player of the year James Franklin, a running back from Olathe (Kan.) North.

Marsh was Nebraska's Gatorade player of the year and became the state's all-time leader for career passing yards in 11-man football with 6,826.

The 6-foot, 205-pounder passed for 2,415 yards while leading the Patriots to the Class A state championship.

Monday attempts to reach Marsh were unsuccessful.
