What to do this weekend

It's almost the end of January, moms. How the heck did that happen?

You know what that means, though, right?

We're that much closer to the end of winter!

And that rocks.

Here are a few ideas to help pass the time this weekend.

Today

-- Join the Henry Doorly Zoo, Joslyn Art Museum and the Omaha Public Library at the Omaha Children's Museum from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today to kick-off Omaha's Big Read 2010: Celebrating the Poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Watch a puppet show and take part in other hands-on activities.

Today

-- Take your kids to see "Help! I'm a Fish" through Feb. 4 at Film Streams.

The animated film, geared toward children 4 to 10, follows the underwater adventures of three children who stumble upon a hidden cave, finding and drinking a potion that transforms them into sea creatures.

Show time is 1:45 p.m. today.

Film Streams is located at 1340 Mike Fahey St.

-- "Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion" opens today at the Strategic Air and Space Museum near Ashland, Neb.

The exhibit presents 40 full-scale machines that were built after study of da Vinci's designs by scientists and craftsmen in Florence, Italy. Many of the mechanisms are life-sized and fully operational.

Visitors can touch and set them in motion, combining hands-on experience with an exploration of the principles he employed to create each machine. Exhibits include such visionary inventions as the helicopter, glider, armored tank, drive transmission, printing press and bicycle.

General admission applies, plus an exhibit fee of $5 per person. The show will run through May 9.

-- Work hard and play harder in the "Construction Zone," the newest traveling exhibit at the Omaha Children's Museum.

The construction site gives kids opportunities to dig, design and build. Parents can help, too.

Hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Admission is $7 for adults and children over the age of 2. $6 for seniors over 60, and free for members and children under 2.

-- Come see us at the 2010 Midlands International Auto Show. It continues through the weekend at the Qwest Center Omaha. See new cars, trucks and SUVs alongside classic vehicles, motorcycles and street rods. Kidz Corner will feature family entertainment including the Tumbler from "The Dark Knight," bouncers and more.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 7 to 12. Children 6 and under are free. Seniors and members of the military with ID are $5.

Josie Loza: Families with multiples
I stared at this photo of Bell Elementary School students and then the chart on my laptop. My eyes were drawn to Nate Reyes, a cute kid wearing glasses and Batman shirt. He's A3 on the chart. The World-Herald featured these 33 kids who are part of multiples. In the photo, there were 13 sets of twins, one set of triplets and one set of quadruplets. Amazing, right? I bet the teachers at this school are used to seeing double, sometimes triple, vision. Click the headline to read more.
