SAN DIEGO — The U.S.-Mexico border is just 15 miles from the team hotels, but Arizona players have been instructed not to take any international excursions.

Players here for the Holiday Bowl have been known to make trips across the border in the past, but ongoing violence in Tijuana has claimed dozens of lives this year. In fact, a San Diego woman was among six people killed two weeks ago when she was hit by a stray bullet at a Tijuana restaurant.

“We turned off Tijuana to them,” Arizona coach Mike Stoops said. “It was off limits. Nothing good has been happening down there for some time.”

    Players warned of pedicabs

Stoops said security personnel at their hotel also warned them against riding on pedicabs, three-wheeled cycles pedaled by drivers who shuttle tourists around downtown. There have been safety concerns with the vehicles as well as incidents of drivers overcharging unsuspecting tourists.

“You try to be as insightful as you can,” Stoops said. “Bring people in to educate them about the places to go and what to do here.”

    Stoops: Suh ‘a great challenge'

It seems that a day doesn't go by without someone asking Stoops about the challenge of facing Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh.

Following Saturday's practice at the University of San Diego, Stoops was asked: “When you face a guy like Suh, do you acknowledge how good he is to your players, or do you tell them to just treat him like somebody else?”

Said Stoops: “Our players watch ‘SportsCenter' and they've seen all the highlights and watched him play all year, so I don't really have to say much. They know what the challenge is.

“Certainly that's a great measure to go up against a great player like him, who could be the No. 1 pick in the draft. It's a great challenge for our players.

“We're going to have to play very well up front offensively, and we have all year.”

    Teams check out SeaWorld

Both teams were scheduled to tour SeaWorld following Saturday's practices. The San Diego Zoo is on Sunday's itinerary.
