COUNCIL BLUFFS — The newly created Green Hills Area Education Agency is close to hiring a chief administrator, and the board could announce its decision as early as today.
The interview process is over and three teams of interviewers have made recommendations to the new Green Hills AEA board, according to Council Bluffs Community School Superintendent Martha Bruckner, a member of one of the interview teams.
The job would pay about $180,000 a year plus benefits. The starting date is July 1.
The Green Hills AEA is a new agency created by the merger of AEA 13 and AEA 14. The new agency will include 51 school districts in 15 counties.
AEAs are regional agencies providing service and support to local school systems. The AEAs were created by the Iowa Legislature in 1974 and are similar to educational service units in Nebraska.
The four finalists for the AEA post interviewed this week. One of the four has been identified as Iowa City Superintendent Lane Plugge.
Plugge was a superintendent in Grand Island, Neb., before moving to Iowa City in 1999. His current salary is $174,021 annually under a contract that runs through June 30, 2012, according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Plugge told the newspaper, “The big motivation for me is family.” His mother and other relatives live in Omaha, where he grew up, and his children and grandchildren live in Lincoln.
